Industrial Safety Specialists may work for private companies, consulting firms or government organizations. Industrial Safety Specialists evaluate potential hazards, like biological, chemical and physical threats, according to local, state and federal guidelines and regulations.

The safety specialist or engineer is employed by management and is part of the managerial and supervisory staff directing the work of employees. The safety specialist thus shares the responsibilities of management. He (or she) will periodically inspect the plant, machinery, tools and various work operations in order to determine mechanical and physical hazards and unsafe practices of employees. The specialist suggests and recommends improvements, takes part in the training and education of supervisors and employees, conducts or participates in safety meetings, acts as co-ordinator of safety work and as liaison agent with higher executives. In general, the task of the safety specialist is to supervise and promote the work of accident prevention.

Industrial Safety Specialists seek to make workplaces as hazard-free as possible for employees, using knowledge they've gained through bachelor's degree programs and on the job training. Safety engineer is an employee whose job is to inspect all possible danger spots in the mine and plant; to cooperate with safety committees in various parts of the organization and agencies such as the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration, the National Safety Council, and State bureaus and inspectors; to head all rescue work, first-aid instruction courses, and safety-first meetings; and to draw up and enforce a written code of minimum safety requirements for all work at the mine and plant.

Industrial Safety Specialists (Industrial engineers) determine the most effective ways to use the basic factors of production - people, machines, materials, information, and energy - to make a product or to provide a service. An Industrial Safety Specialist's tasks may include investigating and reporting on workplace accidents, measuring biological or chemical contaminants, assessing physical hazards and conducting investigations of local, state and federal occupational health and safety violations. They are more concerned with increasing productivity through the management of people, methods of business organization, and technology than are engineers in other specialties, who generally work more with products or processes.

Although most industrial engineers work in manufacturing industries, they may also work in consulting services, healthcare, and communications.

To solve organizational, production, and related problems most efficiently, industrial engineers carefully study the product and its requirements, use mathematical methods such as operations research to meet those requirements, and design manufacturing and information systems. They develop management control systems to aid in financial planning and cost analysis and design production planning and control systems to coordinate activities and ensure product quality.

Industrial Safety Specialists need great observation and reporting skills. They need to demonstrate tact and diplomacy in dealing with management, other employees and external oversight agencies. Solid computer and communication skills are also essential for success in the field.

A Fire Safety Inspector (also known as Fire Officer or Fire Safety Officer) is a public law enforcement officer responsible for the enforcement fire safety legislation in the United Kingdom.

As Public Law Enforcement officers, Fire Inspectors are duty bound, by law, to enforce fire safety legislation y they are employed by, for the protection of members of the general public.

Fire Inspectors, like any other major enforcing officers from other enforcing authorities, have the same powers of authority of that of a police constable except that they cannot arrest persons. A police officer cannot gain forceable entry into a premises unless in pursuit (chasing) a criminal or suspected criminal.

· Inspectors have powers to enter premises for the purposes of undertaking routine fire safety inspections. They can also close (prohibit) or restrict the use of unsafe buildings, issue other legal notices which enforce compliance with current fire safety legislation. Failure to comply with a notice is a ordinarily a criminal offence.

· Most routine inspections result in minor failings being found and this is normally dealt with by a report which asks for the deficiencies to addressed within a certain timescale. More serious cases however may warrant that immediate action is taken to reduce the risk to building occupants. In some cases the buildings may be closed or the use of the building restricted because of a deemed risk to public and building occupant's safety.

· Inspectors also have powers investigate the commission of an offence, and where a person or organisation is suspected of committing an offence which has specifically put persons at imminent risk of injury or death those persons or organisations are usually prosecuted.

There are several professions that perform important roles in occupational safety. The most common are occupational health and safety specialists, also known as safety and health professionals or occupational health and safety inspectors (loss prevention specialists), safety engineers, environmental protection officers, ergonomists.

The safety engineer is trained to identify and predict potential hazards in the workplace that can cause injury to the working man or woman. Once the potentially hazardous conditions are identified, the safety engineer must recommend measures that can be taken to eliminate or neutralize them.

· Occupational health and safety specialists help prevent harm to workers, property, the environment, and the general public. For example, they may design safe work spaces, inspect machines, or test air quality. In addition to making workers safer, specialists aim to increase worker productivity by reducing absenteeism and equipment downtime -and to save money by lowering insurance premiums and workers' compensation payments, and preventing government fines.

· Occupational health and safety specialists analyze work environments and design programs to control, eliminate, and prevent disease or injury. They look for chemical, physical, radiological, and biological hazards. They also work to make more equipment ergonomic—designed to promote proper body positioning, increase worker comfort, and decrease fatigue. Specialists may conduct inspections and inform an organization's management of areas not in compliance with State and Federal laws or employer policies. They also advise management on the cost and effectiveness of safety and health programs. These programs usually emphasize accident prevention and the development and maintenance of a safe working environment.

· They use their own knowledge and experience to evaluate current equipment, products, facilities, or processes and those planned for future use. They evaluate the probability and severity of accidents and identify where controls need to be implemented to reduce or eliminate risk. If an injury or illness occurs, occupational health and safety specialists help investigate, studying its causes and recommending remedial action. Some occupational health and safety specialists help workers to return to work after accidents and injuries.

· Loss prevention specialists work for insurance companies, inspecting the facilities that they insure and suggesting and helping to implement improvements.

· Specialists monitor safety measurements in order to advise management of safety performance to correct existing safety hazards and to avoid future hazards; they write reports, including accident reports. They also may prepare documents used in legal proceedings.

· The responsibilities of occupational health and safety specialists vary by industry, workplace, and types of hazards affecting employees. Environmental protection officers evaluate and coordinate the storage and handling of hazardous waste, the cleanup of contaminated soil or water, or other activities that affect the environment. Ergonomists consider the design of industrial, office, and other equipment to maximize worker comfort, safety, and productivity.

Emergency managers are trained in a wide variety of disciplines that support them throughout the emergency life-cycle. Training is provided by local, state, federal and private organizations and ranges from public information and media relations to high-level incident command and tactical skills such as studying a terrorist bombing site or controlling an emergency scene.

Educational opportunities are increasing for those seeking undergraduate and graduate degrees in emergency management or a related field. There are over 180 schools in the US with emergency management-related programs. Professional certifications such as Certified Emergency Manager and are becoming more common as the need for high professional standards is recognized by the emergency management community, especially in the United States.

Physical Fitness for Search and Rescue is important. Search and Rescue is often physically demanding, so a moderate to high level of fitness is definitely an asset. However, while a number of them are in excellent physical condition, others have chronic injuries or limitations that prevent them from participating in the more physically difficult missions.

Keep in mind, there are many ways to help a team aside from the primary acts of searching and rescuing. During a mission, not every responding team member hikes up a mountain with a backpack full of equipment or rappels into a canyon, but everyone performs a function, even if that means simply sitting tight and waiting as backup if needed. Tasks might include driving to and from staging areas so other team members can rest, helping to prepare maps and briefings for the missions as they arise, delivering food and drinks to searchers in the field, or driving perimeter roads to contain a lost subject.

Non-mission assistance can include maintaining equipment, such as vehicles and technical gear and so forth.

A Rescuer is a person who rescues something from harm or danger. They are trained in technical rescue, diver rescue, mountain rescue, extrication rescue, or/and advance technical firefighting. The term is commonly used with people who are doing a rescue and in some careers use "Rescuer" as the job title. The job as a rescuer is to mainly to save lives during a dangerous environments.

North America departments have their rescuers mix within normal fire fighters. They share the same equipment and pointed as the leader during a rescue mission. Rescuers have classroom and field training with senior rescue members. The only time when groups of rescuers are in teams are during water rescue, air rescue, mountain rescue, or a major disaster.

Asian departments form special units of rescuers. These rescuers have their own equipments, apparatus or even their own fire station. Training is like a recruit training and the trainees may be asked to quit if their performance does not meet certain standards. After passing training they are sent to a Rescue Unit and given extra training within that unit.

Search and rescue (SAR) is the search for and provision of aid to people who are in distress or imminent danger. Search and Rescue involves not only searching for missing people and rescuing injured hikers, climbers, skiers, hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts, but body recoveries, evidence searches and disaster response as well. The general field of search and rescue includes many sub-fields, mostly based upon terrain considerations. These include mountain rescue; ground search and rescue, including the use of search and rescue dogs; urban search and rescue in cities.

SAR task forces are expected to be totally self-sufficient for the first 72 hours of a deployment. The equipment cache used to support a task force can weigh more than 60,000 pounds and is worth more than $1.4 million US. USAR task forces can:

conduct physical search-and-rescue in collapsed buildings;

provide emergency medical care to trapped victims;

utilize search and rescue dogs to find survivors of the collapse;

assess and control utilities and hazardous materials;

evaluate and stabilize damaged structures.

In a disaster situation the goal of a search and rescue operation is to rescue the greatest number of people in the shortest amount of time, while minimizing the risk to the rescuers.

Rescue comprises responsive operations that usually involve the saving of life, or prevention of injury during an incident or dangerous situation. Tools used might include search dogs, search and rescue horses, helicopters and other hydraulic cutting and spreading tools used to extricate individuals from wrecked vehicles. Rescue operations are sometimes supported by special vehicles such as fire department's or EMS heavy rescue vehicle.

Ropes and special devices can reach and remove individuals and animals from difficult locations including: air-sea rescue; cave rescue; combat search and rescue; confined space rescue; fast water rescue; ice rescue; mines rescue; rope rescue; search and rescue; ski patrol rescue; urban search and rescue; vehicle rescue; wilderness rescue.

Rescue operations require a high degree of training and are performed by rescue squads, either independent or part of larger organizations such as fire, police, military, first aid, or ambulance services. In the US, they are usually staffed by medically trained personnel.

There are many different definitions of search and rescue, depending on the agency involved.

Unites States Defense Department: A search is "an operation normally coordinated by a Rescue Coordination Center (RCC) using available personnel and facilities to locate persons in distress". And rescue is "an operation to retrieve persons in distress, provide for their initial medical or other needs, and deliver them to a place of safety.

Search and Rescue has a number of categories. Those categories and definitions include:

Mountain rescue relates to search and rescue operations specifically in rugged and mountainous terrain. Missions in this category may take place not only on mountainous terrain but also in forests and deserts, caves and canyons, on rivers and lakes, and so on.

Ground search and rescue is the search for persons who are lost or in distress on land or inland waterways. Traditionally associated with wilderness zones, ground search and rescue services are increasingly required in urban and suburban areas to locate persons Alzheimer’ disease, autism, dementia, or other conditions that lead to wandering behaviour. Some ground search teams also employ search and rescue dogs. Dogs and their handlers undergo extensive and ongoing training.

Marine Search & Rescue: In the U.S. these types of missions are often carried out by the Coast Guard.

Urban search and rescue (US&R) is the location and rescue of persons from collapsed buildings or other urban and industrial entrapments, involving citizens following earthquakes, storms, flooding and other natural and human-caused disasters. Due to the specialized nature of the work, most teams are multi-disciplinary and include personnel from police, fire and emergency medical services. Unlike traditional ground search and rescue workers, most US&R responders also have basic training in structural collapse and the dangers associated with live electrical wires, broken natural gas lines and other hazards. While earthquakes have traditionally been the cause of US&R operations, terrorist attacks and extreme weather such as tornadoes and hurricanes have also resulted in the deployment these resources.

Going to search - rescue efforts, rescuers (rescue workers) should have a set of necessary items that might be useful: the signal mirror; hunting match or dry fuel tablets; whistle; a large knife; a compass, a piece of a dense foil and polyethylene, fishing accessories, alarm cartridges, emergency medical kit, water and food supply.

In order to facilitate the search it is expedient to use the international ground-to-air emergency codes (see Fig. 1). These signals are used by survivors to indicate messages to the rescue teams looking for them from the air. These symbols can be made on the ground or trodden on snow by using strips of fabric, clothes, pieces of wood, stones or any other available material or they should be made by people who have to lie on the ground, snow, ice.

You must be sure that the symbols are large enough to be seen by an aircraft flying overhead. You must try to make as big a color contrast as possible between your symbol(s) and the surrounding terrain. Symbols should be at least 8 feet (3 m) in height or longer. In addition, you should use any means possible to try and attract an aircraft's attention: radio, flames, smoke, flares etc.

The pilot will respond if the signal is understood by rocking the aircraft’s wings from side to side during daylight or flashing the aircraft’s landing lights or navigation lights ON and OFF.
